leather giftsBAEKS baskets are made with premium saddle leather from North American cowhide. It's the thickest part of the hide. Bitter cold winters in the American plains produce thick, protective hides. An old-fashioned, natural, vegetable tanning process, using materials from tree bark, makes the leather more pliable and resistant to decay, preserving it for centuries of enjoyment.

After these sturdy hides have been properly tanned they're measured and cut to size. Three rows of stitching add strength and visual balance. The thread used in our baskets is five-cord nylon thread - the same tough thread used to stitch harnesses. If horses don’t rip it apart, you won’t either, with it sitting on your table or bookcase! That is why a Texas leather expert said, with proper care and handling, they would last for at least 300 years!

To attach the handle, we use solid brass “Chicago” screws, much stronger than mere rivets, applying Lock-Tite® to ensure a permanent connection. All of the edges are rounded and smoothed. The handle edges are polished with a special Brazilian carnauba wax compound for a buttery-smooth feel. Then for the final step, a show finish oil spray is applied to give each basket a lustrous, lasting shine.

The thicker the leather, the heavier it is. The heavier it is, the more expensive it is. So you can see, by using ¼” thick leather we’ve truly spared no expense in making BAEKS heirloom-quality luxurious leather baskets and have worked very hard to make them affordable for everyone who wants one.
